Faith in Action: How We Believe

In the 21st century as in the 11th century, St Bene’t’s is home to a community drawn together to worship God, and called to live lives that show what God’s love looks like. You can learn more about our worship at this link . Here’s a taster of how we live out our faith in the world:

EcoChurch

In 2024, St Bene’t’s received the A Rocha Eco Church Bronze Award, and we are already striving for silver. We believe that caring for Creation is an important Christian value, and one that we celebrate both as a community and in our own homes. Our environmental stewardship includes:

  • Solar panels which generate far more electricity than we use.

  • Environmentally sustainable practices in ministry — including recycled paper, fair trade coffee, composting our kitchen waste, and encouraging coming to church on foot, by bus, or bike.

  • Preaching and teaching about the faithful work of Creation care and environmental stewardship, and connecting with local environmental organisations.

An Inclusive Church

St Bene’t’s is an inclusive and diverse Christian community, putting into practice St. Benedict’s Rule:  All guests who present themselves are to be welcomed as Christ, for he himself will say: “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” As part of our Benedictine welcome, St Bene’t’s is proud to be a member of the Inclusive Church Network.  We are a safe space, where LGBQT+ and neurodivergent Christians are welcomed as full members of our community. Our church is wheelchair accessible (and we are working to improve our accessibility further).  We are a multigenerational community, with active members and leaders of all ages.  We affirm the ministry of women, including in the priesthood, and we seek in our community and leadership to reflect the great diversity of God’s Kingdom.

Mission Giving

Every year, St Bene’t’s tithes from our income to other charities — working both locally and globally to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, welcome the refugee, and care for God’s creation.  In addition to our financial giving, we engage in relationship and education with our mission partners about the faithful work they are doing.  Our recent mission partners include Refugee Egypt (working with Sudanese refugees thorugh the Anglican Cathedral in Cairo), CamCRAG (a local charity supporting refugees in Cambridge and beyond), Kyangala Trust (empowering and supporting communities in Kenya),  Abbey Food Hub (a food distribution charity in East Barnwell), and Embrace (partnering with Christians in the Middle East)

Deepening our Faith

Throughout the year we offer opportunities to deepen our faith — seasonal study groups, Resourcing Faith and Sunday Supplement talks, Bible study, preparation classes for Confirmation and Baptism, weekly groups for children, and our 20s & 30s Group for young adults and students.
